GTA Complimentary Pass Policy

At its January meeting, the GTA Board made changes to the Complimentary Pass Policy for all transit services. The new policy is as follows:

GTA will issue one complimentary pass to any rider who has been charged an incorrect fare, or who has experienced poor customer service. Poor customer service includes rude or discourteous treatment from the operator, lack of air conditioning on the vehicle, or lateness of the vehicle. A late trip is defined as one resulting in the rider missing his or her connection at the depot. In order to receive a complimentary pass for poor customer service or late trips, you will need to notify your street supervisor to request a complimentary pass the day the incident or late trip occurs.

This is actually great news... I'm sure if they have to give away lots of passes for missing the connection something will start to change.

N.C. Lawmakers Propose Studying Medical Marijuana

RALEIGH — Should state lawmakers spend their time studying marijuana and should Tar Heel taxpayers foot the research bill? Joint Resolution 2405, introduced May 26 by Rep. Earl Jones (D-Guilford), would have the legislative research commission exploring the possibility of allowing this long-studied gateway drug to be used as medicine — a move many see as the first step toward legalizing all marijuana use.

“Studies have already been performed that clearly demonstrate there are other drugs available today that are equal in benefits and safer than the effects of medical marijuana,” said the Rev. Mark Creech, executive director of the Christian Action League of North Carolina. How could this affect crime in your community?

It is indeed strange times we live in when me and Earl Jones are on the same side of an issue but for once the SOB has done something right.

Mariuana should be leaglised... first off its NOT A DRUG anymore than cigarettes are and if the government is going to ban pot then they should ban all forms of tobacco!

Rev. Mark Creech is paying into the governments bullshit they been sprending about pot since 1933 when they build the Federal Narcodics Farm in Lexington,KY to test different drugs to make a super soilder. There were two studies on marijuana done before the Lexington report but them reports did not give the results the government wanted so they did there own and wouldn't you know it... it was completely oppisite from the others and thats the one the US Health departmant holds up and refuses to allow any new reports.

Billions of dollars per year are spent on the "war on drugs" to keep the public from using a natural herb to lower high blood presure, hyper activity, and stress. A product that is no more harmful than tobacco or alchoal that is legal and known to have health issues. Course both slip envelopes into the right pockets in Wash. D.C.

Do the study... do it fair and honest. Remember anything that is abused can be harmful to your health... give marijuana the same consideration you give Newports & Jack Daniels.

Detainees who have spoken with attorneys are providing reports of substantial violations by Agriprocessors, including wage, labor and immigration violations, according to the suit. The detainees are immediate release or for a reasonable period of time before being moved out of state to meet with counsel and have confidential communications.

The suit claims Sonia Parras Konrad, a Polk County attorney, interviewed over 50 detainees who told her Agriprocessors: procured false identification for its immigrant employees; withheld money from their paychecks for "immigration fees"; didn't allow employees to use the restroom during 10-hour shifts; didn't compensate employees for overtime; and were physically abused by supervisors.

The suit also has excerpts from an affidavit filed by David M. Hoagland, senior special agent for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in support of the search warrant issued on Agriprocessors. The alleged violations in the affidavit include:

— Equipment issued to perform work was substandard

— A floor supervisors duct-taped the eyes of a Guatemalan employee and then hit the employee with a meat hook

— Immigrants were paid $5 an hour and after three or four months, bumped up to $6.

The affidavit also contains numerous allegations of violations of the federal racketeering laws including:

— Employee's taxes were deducted and deposited into bank accounts belonging to an unknown person or people.

— An employee transported immigrant employees across state lines to Minnesota to get false state identification cards

— Checks were issued to certain immigrants with an unknown person's name on it and the check would be cashed at another portion of the plant

— A Department of Transportation investigator provided information that a supervisor at the company used an intricate and unlawful scheme to purchase and register a large number of car for resale to the employees and a supervisor forced the employees to buy the cars from him or be fired.

Named in the suit is: United States Immigration Customs Enforcement; Department of Homeland Security; Julie Myers, assistant secretary of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement; Claude Arnold, Immigration and Customs special agent in charge at Postville; Michael Chertoff, secretary of Department of Homeland Security and Michael Mukasey, Attorney General of the United States.

This is a very common phrase and it connotes the “ultimate” in handling many situations.

This is just the tip of the iceberg... once these trucks state flooding across are the Mexican trucks going to do to shipping what Mexican workers have down the wages in this country? Aren't American trucking companies facing enough problems with the cost of everything shooting for the moon?

Now still the time to put the spotlight on this and all other immigration issues.
With the elections coming up, we need to keep voicing our dis-approval of NAFTA (which needs to be shit canned) we need to protect or boards from illegal entry on foot and 18 wheels!

WELL I"M CALLING FOR AN INVESTIGATION TOO!

I want someone to investigate the link between the T&RC, GSO PD, and the local drug dealers here in Greensboro. We know the SIMS PAC (another civil rights front for the dopers) is linked cause they paid for the lawyers for one of the biggest dealers in this city, and cause they got together with the black cops to get rid of a good police chief that was cleaning out the bad cops.

I'm betting their source in department is one of the cop/dope dealers trying to draw off the heat.
Lets investigate this T&RC to see if any of these preachers/civil rights leaders take money from the drug dealers ...
Why since chief Bellemy took office are the dope dealers still doing open business without the cops doing shit about it, why is the city manger (Mitch Johnson) bending over backwards to stop any efforts to clean up the police dept. or allow the elected city leaders to learn why things went the way they did in the Hinson investigation .

New Arizona Law Needed Nationwide

March 1st a new law that add teeth and enforces laws we already have on the book is starting to have a effect.
The law would give local sheriffs/police authority to enforce mitigation laws and hit employers with hefty fines. Wetbacks are already running home to old Mexico or other states that are more welcoming to the criminals. Yeah thats right criminals! Entry into the United States without a visa is a crime rather you like it or not. Not to mention driving without a license or insurance.
There is a downside... a few have bought homes and vehicles using loans from illegal friendly banks like Bank of America. When they leave chances are they will default on the loans... and take their vehicles with them. Now at least the banks can get the houses but it does bring a smile to my face thinking of BOA taking such a financial beating.

And once she sees that she can reach into your pocket for this where does it end?

TAMPA, Florida (CNN) -- Jason -- that's the name CNN was asked to call him -- slides a simulated explosive into an elastic back support. The mock bomb is as slim as a wallet; its fuse, the size of a cigarette. He wraps the support around his torso, and the bomb fits comfortably into the small of his back.

It's hard to tell he's concealing anything; harder still when he dons a black T-shirt and a maroon golf shirt.

Then, with CNN's cameras in tow, Jason heads to Tampa International Airport, where he'll try to sneak the fake explosive past security screeners.

Jason, a covert tester for the Transportation Security Administration, has been probing airport weaknesses for five years, beginning with big mock bombs before switching to ever smaller devices as the TSA adapts to evolving terrorist threats. Video Watch the tester slip past security »

As jobs go, this one comes with its own unique set of satisfactions and tribulations. Jason wants to succeed at his task -- and he wants to fail. Success is a measure of his stealth, hewn by 40 years in law enforcement. But failure is satisfying too, because it means airport screeners are growing more adept at detecting threats.

So Jason -- looking every bit the middle-aged man on an uneventful trip to anywhere -- shows a boarding pass and an ID to a TSA document checker, and he is directed to a checkpoint where, unbeknown to the security officer on site, the real test begins.

He gets through, which in real life would mean a terrorist was headed toward a plane with a bomb.

To be clear, the TSA allowed CNN to see and record this test, and the agency is not concerned with CNN showing it. The TSA says techniques such as the one used in Tampa are known to terrorists and openly discussed on known terror Web sites.

Even before the September 11, 2001, terror attacks, government agencies deployed "red teams" such as this one to look for holes in airport security. The tests have resulted in a torrent of reports criticizing the government for failing to staff, train, manage and equip properly the screener work force, which numbers 43,000.

While test results are classified and rarely leak out, those that have been disclosed typically don't inspire confidence. In tests conducted in 2006 and disclosed to USA Today last year, investigators successfully smuggled 75 percent of fake bombs through checkpoints at Los Angeles International Airport, 60 percent through Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and 20 percent at San Francisco International Airport.

The TSA has disputed some test methodologies and test results. But instead of running from tests, the agency has embraced the idea that testing has a value that goes beyond measuring the performance of individual screeners.

Tests, the TSA says, can show systemwide security vulnerabilities. When used frequently -- as was the case with San Francisco in 2006 -- they can heighten screener awareness. Tests can show areas that need increased attention. And tests can be used to determine whether terrorist plots uncovered by intelligence agencies or being discussed on terrorist Web sites are lunatic rants, or are plausible.

As a result, the TSA says it believes its work force is the most tested in the federal government, with checkpoint drills of various sophistication occurring in every checkpoint at every airport daily.

Almost an hour before Jason approached the checkpoint, a fellow red team member had gone through the checkpoint. It's this member's job to make sure the test is conducted safely.

Five minutes before the test begins, he uses a cell phone to call Tampa's federal security director, the airport's top security official.

"Sir, the reason we're calling today is to tell you that we will be conducting covert testing at your airport," the red team leader says. "But I would ask that you not speak to anyone on your staff to alert them of this test."

The message is clear: Don't tell anyone. Testers say they will scratch a test if they believe anyone has been alerted. The TSA was embarrassed several years ago when word of one test leaked out, and an internal auditor is investigating other possible leaks.

But in Tampa, everything goes smoothly as Jason steps through the metal detector portal. The detector alarm goes off, as Jason expects it to, not because of the nonmetallic device strapped to his back but due to his metal knee.

It's the perfect tool for ensuring he gets to "secondary," where more extensive searches are conducted.

Soon Jason is in a posture familiar to air travelers. He is standing, legs apart, with his arms extended. A screener "wands" him with a hand-held metal detector, and it beeps as it passes his metal knee, his necklace and the rivets on his bluejeans.

The screener then pats him down, running latex-gloved hands over Jason's legs, arms and torso. And he pats down Jason's back, including the lower part where the device is concealed.

But Jason explains away the back support. He tells the screener that he has a bum back in addition to having a metal knee.

With the patdown over, the screener releases Jason. He picks up his belongings and walks freely into the airport, the fake bomb still fastened to his back.

TSA officials say the Tampa test demonstrates the type of systemic vulnerability that the agency is working to expose and address.

Screeners have cultural sensitivities toward travelers' handicaps, and they are sometimes hesitant to perform intrusive searches, officials said. Terrorists could exploit that reluctance, they said.

The TSA screener could have used other relatively unobtrusive means to check Jason's back brace. But he didn't.

After leaving the screening checkpoint, Jason returns with other members of his red team and informs the screener he has failed a test. A fake bomb has just entered their airport.

The screener appears devastated.

The reaction is common, says Jason, adding that notifying screeners of failed tests can be the toughest part of his job.

On occasions, he says, testers have appeared indifferent. In those rare instances, Jason says, he gets "nasty," stressing the importance of the tests. The stakes are too high to tolerate indifference.

Regardless of their reactions, screeners who fail to detect contraband are "pulled off the line" and retrained before being allowed back.

The test CNN witnessed was conducted by the TSA's Office of Inspection, which the agency calls the most sophisticated of its covert tests. But there are others.

For starters, every TSA X-ray machine has a Threat Image Projection system, which digitally inserts images of guns, knives and bombs into the X-rays of luggage, to keep screeners alert. This system library contains "tens of thousands" of images, said TSA spokesman Christopher White.

If screeners observe a suspicious object, they can check with the simple click of a computer mouse. If they detect a threat object, the computer congratulates them. Successes and failures are recorded for use in a screener's performance evaluation and are factors in determining pay.

Some 69,929 threat image tests are conducted on an average day, or more than 25 million tests per year. An array of other tests also are conducted to assess screeners, including the red team ones.

The TSA declines to give test results, which are classified. But it says the agency is getting better at finding bomb parts. And test scores won't demonstrate that, it says, because as success rates improve, tests are made more difficult.

"We're designing our tests not so much to indicate or to show or highlight performance," says Dave Holmes, who runs the Office of Inspection, "but we're highlighting where the vulnerabilities exist."

The elaborate test at the Tampa airport, Holmes says, is not to identify individuals performing below par. It's intended to provide data that, together with other information, will reveal the whole system's performance.

Back at the Tampa checkpoint, a member of Jason's red team is holding court with a group of screeners, including the one who missed the fake bomb.

"Today ... was a scrimmage," the red team leader says. "Every day, every time a passenger is coming through -- that is game day."

Proposed Motor Cross Park In King William

Too much traffic, too much noise and a negative impact on the environment. That's exactly what neighbors in King William County say will happen if the county approves a new motocross sports complex.

KW Morrison, LLC, applied for a special permit to build a five track motorcross raceway off Route 30 in Aylett. The company wants to develop a large, five track motocross raceway, including parking for more than 500 vehicles. The 300 plus acres are located off Route 30 about 4 miles north of Route 360.

But neighbors say putting it in the middle of a residential area is just unacceptable. Hundreds of opponents signed a petition against the track. Now they want the county take their concerns to heart.

Dr. Judith Gwathmey owns 200 acres right next to the proposed site.

She says, "This motocross is not conducive with the county's plan. A compromise is out of the question. No modifications to the plan will be acceptable to the citizens and yes, if necessar we will engage legal counsel to defend our rights."

Perrin Gower, a local geologist says he has huge concerns about the negative impact to the environment.

"Possible soil and ground water contamination is a potential problem. The water that runs through that acreage is pristine. The river association has tested the creeks for coloform and there is none. You can drink that water."

Neighbor, Jeanette Wagner says that's why they formed a non-profit group called "Citizens for King William County." She wants other concerned neighbors to join them for Thursday's community meeting.

Wagner says, "The meeting is good because we'll see some people becoming more involved because they're more aware."

But CBS 6 did talk to one person who hopes neighbors will give the project a chance.

Larry Jenks, of Jinx ATV & Cycle says, "It'll give the kids in the community something to do. Right now you have to drive two hours to get somewhere to ride. This will keep kids off the streets."

The next community meeting will be held Thursday, January 17th, at the Upper King William Senior Center at 7 pm.

In the next few months, the developer will meet with neighbors again to address their concerns.

Tina Griego, journalist for the Denver Rocky Mountain News wrote a column
titled, "Mexican visitor's lament" -- 10/25/07.

She interviewed Mexican journalist Evangelina Hernandez while visiting
Denver last week. Hernandez said,

"They (illegal aliens) pay rent, buy groceries, buy clothes...what happens
to your country's economy if 20 million people go away?"

That's a good question - it deserves an answer. Over 80 percent of Americans
demand secured borders and illegal migration stopped. But what would happen
if all 20 million or more vacated America? The answers may surprise you!

In California, if 3.5 million illegal aliens moved back to Mexico, it would
leave an extra $10.2 billion to spend on overloaded school systems,
bankrupted hospitals and overrun prisons. It would leave highways cleaner,
safer and less congested. Everyone could understand one another as English
became the dominate language again.

In Colorado, 500,000 illegal migrants, plus their 300,000 kids and
grand-kids - would move back "home," mostly to Mexico. That would save
Coloradans an estimated $2 billion (other experts say $7 BIL) annually in
taxes that pay for schooling, medical, social-services and incarceration
costs. It means 12,000 gang members would vanish out of Denver alone.

Colorado would save more than $20 million in prison costs, and the terror
that those 7,300 alien criminals set upon local citizens. Denver Officer Don
Young and hundreds of Colorado victims would not have suffered death,
accidents, rapes and other crimes by illegals.

Denver Public Schools would not suffer a 67 percent drop out/flunk out rate
via thousands of illegal alien students speaking 41 different languages. At
least 200,000 vehicles would vanish from our gridlocked cities in Colorado.
Denver's four percent unemployment rate would vanish as our working poor
would gain jobs at a living wage.

In Florida, 1.5 million illegals would return the Sunshine State back to
America, the rule of law and English.

In Chicago, Illinois, 2.1 million illegals would free up hospitals, schools,
prisons and highways for a safer, cleaner and more crime-free experience.

If 20 million illegal aliens returned "home" --

If 20 million illegal aliens returned "home," the U.S. economy would return
to the rule of law. Employers would hire legal American citizens at a
living wage. Everyone would pay their fair share of taxes because they
wouldn't be working off the books. That would result in an additional $401
billion in IRS income taxes collected annually, and an equal amount for
local state and city coffers.

No more push '1' for Spanish or '2' for English. No more confusion in
American schools that now must content with over 100 languages that degrade
the educational system for American kids. Our overcrowded schools would
lose more than two million illegal alien kids at a cost of billions in ESL

GTA - Sardine cans on wheels...

For those of my fans that don't know our local public bus company here is GTA (Greensboro Transit Authority) the spend lot of money refurbishing and old railroad depot, and on a bunch of brightly painted mini buses for college students. And they have lots of board meetings and feel good get togethers to pat them selfs on the back for doing such a good job....

Last Sat I took my weekly bus ride over to Yancyville Rd... I took the Summit Ave (Rt 6) which was standing room only leaving the depot.
I caught the returning bus later that afternoon in front of the Guilford Co social services building.
By the time the bus got to Bessimer St it was totally packed ... I'm talking not even room for more to stand. We (the bus) pulled up to one bus stop with a dozen or so people waiting to tell them there was no room and another bus would be by in an hour.

GTA runs buses on Sat once per hour... period. Even during the weekday when they run every 30 mins theres usually standing room only on this route.
The Four Seasons mall Rt 2 is just as bad.

Maybe I'm soiled... having been born and raised in Albany,NY I got used to CDTA...
Ever 20 mins theres a bus, if its a crowded route they will run two buses together if needed.
Whatever needs to be done to keep customers from turning away or being late. From 5:30 am to 2:30am... theres always a bus coming soon.

Anyhow I was pissed and spent GTA my concerns.... heres what I sent and what came back.

The deal, which will cost the county about $120,000 in interest over four years, was approved by the board - all Republicans - without discussion.

County officials said the cost would be offset by savings from trips to the bank, noting that the nearest Wachovia branch is closer to the county administration building than the nearest Bank of America branch.

Citigroup Inc. has had a similar program for years and Wells Fargo & Co. officials have said they are considering such a card.

Wachovia, also based in Charlotte, does not have a similar credit card program. Wachovia, like Bank of America and other banks, accepts identification issued by Mexican consulates to customers who want to open an account but don't have Social Security numbers.

I got to admit this one has me on the fence. And by surprise. I understand that its kiss a civil righters ass time. But did NC really need to do this? To say were sorry and spit on our forefathers and what they believed.
I agree that it was wrong and I would hope and pray that nobody still believes as the people in 1669 did.
But there are some facts that the civil right groups would like you to totally forget.

Fact; the slaves that were brought over here were in fact already slaves back in Africa.
Tribes would capture members of other tribes they had a disagreement with and sell them to the white slavers.
Of course the strongest ones were kept by the tribe. What ended up coming over here were basically seconds and chances are they would not have lasted long in Africa.

Fact; The decedents of these African slaves have access to better education, better health care, and better social services (something they seem to use often) than they could have dreamed of having back in Mother Africa.

Africa still is a third world country (even being the birthplace of mankind) with wars, drought, famine, aid running out of control... and yes slavery to this day!

To me what the state of NC has said, we're sorry for bringing you to a better way of life.
Yes slavery was wrong, yes it was horrible... but even with the the horrible conditions... its better than what they would have faced in Africa.

Zamboni driver skates by drunken driving law !

NEWARK, New Jersey (AP) -- It's not drunken driving in New Jersey if it involves a Zamboni.

A judge ruled the four-ton ice rink-grooming machines aren't motor vehicles because they aren't useable on highways and can't carry passengers.

Zamboni operator John Peragallo had been charged with drunken driving in 2005 after a fellow employee at the Mennen Sports Arena in Morristown, New Jersey, told police the machine was speeding and nearly crashed into the boards.

Police said Peragallo's blood alcohol level was 0.12 percent. A level of 0.08 is considered legally drunk in New Jersey.

Peragallo appealed, and Superior Court Judge Joseph Falcone on Monday overturned his license revocation and penalties.

"It's a vindication for my client," Peragallo attorney James Porfido said after the hearing. "It's the right decision."

Morris County Assistant Prosecutor Joseph D'Onofrio said no decision had been made on whether to appeal.

Peragallo, 64, testified at his trial that he did drink beer and vodka, but not until after he had groomed the ice. However, he told police he had a shot of Sambuca with his breakfast coffee and two Valium-pills before work.

Black mayor-elect's life chaotic before death, police say

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (AP) -- The black mayor-elect of a Louisiana town who died of a gunshot wound in December had gambled away more than $200,000, owed thousands of dollars in back taxes and had several extramarital affairs, according to a state police report.

Don't know about you but this doesn't surprise me for one second.

Gerald Washington was found dead, a gunshot wound to his chest, on December 30, 2006, just days before he was to take office as the first black to be elected mayor of Westlake, a small, mainly white town in southwestern Louisiana.

Now this does surprise my that a bunch of white folks would elect a black to office... they should know what Louisiana blacks are like...just look at New Orleans.

His death spurred speculation that he had been murdered -- a theory put forward by his wife and children -- but also rumors that he had gambling troubles.

Louisiana State Police and the local coroner have ruled Washington's death a suicide, but Washington's family rejected the findings of the two official autopsies. The family paid to to have the body exhumed and sent to Pennsylvania for a third, independent autopsy.

Of course... and when that report don't say what they want they'll cry cover up and call screwy Al Sharpton.

The state police report, released Thursday, said Washington had told his wife "just prior to his death" that "he let her and the kids down by losing $200,000 to $300,000" gambling at casinos.

Washington, 57, had affairs with women ranging in age from 39 to 53, the report said. His wife had been told about one affair, and City Hall had received anonymous phone calls about the infidelities, the report said. One mistress, after catching him with another woman, told Washington that she planned to tell a television news reporter about his affairs, according to the report.

All the forensic evidence points to suicide, the report said. Washington's gun was near his body when it was found, next to his pickup truck, in the parking lot of the building where he attended high school. The wound and splattering of blood indicated he had shot himself, investigators said.

"There is no available information supporting a finding of anything other than suicide," the report said.

Washington's son, Geroski, said he would not comment on the report until he has read all 800 pages. However, when asked if he thought gambling troubles and exposure of extramarital affairs would drive his father to kill himself, Geroski Washington said: "Knowing my father, I would say no."

Geroski Washington and other family members have insisted the two investigations into the death were botched and that Gerald Washington was murdered. His widow, Mary, has depicted her husband as content before his death and looking forward to becoming mayor.

But she told state police a different version. She told investigators that her husband had been depressed before his death, concerned about his gambling losses, and had not eaten or slept for days. Investigators said Washington had received "hate mail" and angry phone calls in the weeks leading up to his swearing-in.

Mary Washington did not immediately return a call for comment Friday.

A woman who claimed to be Washington's mistress told investigators that Washington said, "I have nothing to live for" two months before his death.

Washington worked for ConocoPhillips for 33 years and accepted a retirement package in 2002 worth $726,582. The money had dwindled to $372,083 by the time of his death four years later, the report said.

Patrick Richard, described as a close friend, told investigators that Washington had told him he needed to find $50,000 to pay back taxes.

NEW YORK (AP) -- A planned Holy Week exhibition of a nude, anatomically correct chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ was canceled Friday amid complaints from Catholics, including Cardinal Edward Egan.

The "My Sweet Lord" display was shut down by the hotel that houses the Lab Gallery in Manhattan, said Matt Semler, the gallery's creative director. Semler said he resigned after officials at the Roger Smith Hotel shut down the show.

The artwork was created from more than 200 pounds of milk chocolate and features Christ with his arms outstretched as if on an invisible cross. Unlike the typical religious portrayal of Christ, the artwork does not include a loincloth.

The 6-foot sculpture was the victim of "a strong-arming from people who haven't seen the show, seen what we're doing," Semler said. "They jumped to conclusions completely contrary to our intentions."

But word of the confectionary Christ infuriated Catholics, including Egan, who described it as "a sickening display." Bill Donohue, head of the watchdog Catholic League, said it was "one of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever."

The hotel and the gallery were overrun Thursday with angry phone calls and e-mails. Semler said the calls included death threats over the work of artist Cosimo Cavallaro, who was described as disappointed by the decision to cancel the display.

"In this situation, the hotel couldn't continue to be supportive because of a fear for their own safety," Semler said.

The sculpture was to debut Monday evening, the day after Palm Sunday and just four days before Roman Catholics mark the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Good Friday. The final day of the exhibit was planned for Easter Sunday.

Cavallaro is best known for his quirky work with food. Past efforts include repainting a Manhattan hotel room in melted mozzarella, spraying five tons of pepper jack cheese on a Wyoming home and festooning a four-poster bed with 312 pounds of processed ham.

The Case Against Fred Thompson

Last week The Fix made the case for why former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) should run for president in 2008. Today, the opposing argument.

Two factors make a bid by Thompson an ill-advised proposition -- the incredibly early start of the 2008 campaign and the former senator's well-known distaste for the nuts and bolts of campaigning.

Because John McCain, Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani have essentially been running for much of the past year, they have built national fundraising networks and organizations in key early states.

Thompson has none of that, which wouldn't be a problem if he had shown a passion in past campaigns for building that sort of organization. But he hasn't.

In 1994 Thompson won the special election to serve out Vice President Al Gore's Senate term largely on his star power and his raw ability as a campaigner. Larger than life, Thompson wowed voters on the stump with his down-home populist message -- typified by the red pickup truck in which he toured the state. It didn't hurt that Thompson picked the best Republican year in modern American politics to run for his first elected office.

Two years later, Thompson was easily reelected when he sought a full term, winning more votes than any previous statewide candidate in Tennessee history. And he would have easily won reelection again in 2002 had he decided to run.

Given that he has been almost entirely out of politics for the last five years, and the fact that it's been 13 years since he faced a competitive election, it's something of an understatement to guess that Thompson's political machinery is a bit rusty.

That rust means that Thompson would start from something close to scratch from an organizational and financial standpoint if he decided to enter the race. Such a predicament would require absolute dedication on Thompson's part to raising the tens of millions he would need to be competitive with McCain, Romney and Giuliani. The most Thompson has ever raised for a campaign before is $3.8 million, the sum he collected in his 1994 special election win over Jim Cooper (D). Insiders doubt whether he has the commitment required to stay competitive with the top tier.

Another Thompson character trait that seems to recommend against a presidential candidacy is his tendency to play "Hamlet." After publicly wavering for the better part of a year, Thompson decided not to run for reelection in 2002 just 27 days before Tennessee's filing deadline. Thompson considered a run for president in 2000 before deferring to Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), and he was mentioned as a possible gubernatorial candidate in 2002.

We're not saying Thompson can't change his stripes -- especially given that his wife is apparently urging him to run. But past performance is usually a pretty good indicator of future results.

The other major question surrounding Thompson is how well he would wear with social conservatives. Without an obvious standardbearer in the field, social conservatives might be drawn to Thompson's conservative voting record in the Senate.

But upon deeper examination, how well will Thompson's support among social conservatives hold up? Thompson -- along with McCain -- was one of the main backers of campaign finance reform legislation that is roundly despised by social conservatives due to the perceived limitations it puts on the kind of grassroots organizing essential to groups on the ideological right (or left).

And when he ran for the Senate in 1994, Thompson was routinely described as a supporter of abortion rights. A 1994 story in the Memphis Commercial Appeal described Thompson and his Democratic opponent as "basically pro-choice on abortion," and an Associated Press piece from that same year called Thompson a "pro-choice defender in a party with an anti-abortion tilt."

But in an interview with Fox News's Chris Wallace, Thompson described himself as "pro-life" and called Roe v. Wade "bad law and bad medical science." At some point, Thompson will be forced to explain the seeming contradiction/evolution in his position. (American Spectator is already on the case.)

Thompson's personal life could also raise questions about his social conservative bona fides. He has been married twice, a fact that could well be neutralized by the fact that Giuliani is on his third marriage while McCain has also been married twice. Among the GOP frontrunners, only Romney has been married just once.

It's possible -- likely, even -- that Thompson's best day in the race would be the one on which he announces his candidacy. Thompson's reputation as a less-than-enthusiastic campaigner would severely hamstring his chances of catching up to the frontrunners. And once Thompson's star power wore off, his past political pronouncements could complicate his appeal to social conservatives. Even if he was able to clear each of these hurdles, his nomination would be nowhere near a sure-thing. Staying in private life is a lot more lucrative and a lot less work.

The Case For Fred Thompson

It's been only a week since former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.) acknowledged that he is considering a run for president in 2008.

But in that short time he has managed to generate considerable interest among grassroots activists and the national media alike. The question now is, will Thompson actually run? Today we make the case why he should. Later this week we'll argue the opposite.

Neither of these posts should be read as the definitive take on whether Thompson should run or not. Rather, they are meant to spark conversation, so feel free to agree, disagree, condemn or compliment in the comments section below.

He's Ready for Primetime

A recent CBS/New York Times showed that nearly six-in-ten Republican voters are unhappy with their party's current crop of 2008 White House hopefuls. Just 39 percent of Democrats said the same about their field.

That level of unhappiness is largely centered on the lack of a solidly conservative candidate who has a realistic chance at the nomination. Each of the three frontrunners -- John McCain, Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani -- has flaws of differing sizes and shapes in the eyes of movement conservatives. The two social conservative candidates -- former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback -- have yet to prove they can compete with the campaign organizations and fundraising capacity of the frontrunners.

Enter Thompson. While he was never a leading social conservative voice in the Senate, Thompson's voting record during his eight years in Washington should be acceptable to anyone to the ideological right. Thompson was rated highly by conservative groups during his time in office, and surely won loyalty from conservatives when he squired Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts around Capitol Hill during his 2005 confirmation process.

There is a sense among Republicans that Thompson could stand toe to toe with with the big boys thanks to his star power and personal magnetism. The politician-turned-actor is a well-known face to many Americans from his role as Arthur Branch on the television show "Law and Order." Don't underestimate star power as a factor in politics. Look at California, where the state's voters have twice elected Arnold Schwarzenegger -- a larger than life celebrity who had never before held public office -- as their governor. California is atypical of the country as a whole, but Americans are easily starstruck, and Thompson, frankly, looks the part of a president. (That may be because he played one in "Last Best Chance" in 2005.)

Thompson's decision to retire from the Senate in 2002 rather than seek another term is also a blessing in disguise when it comes to the 2008 presidential race. Ever since his first race for Senate in 1994, Thompson has cast himself as a populist outsider. In that contest for the remaining two years of Vice President Al Gore's Senate term, Thompson -- a political unknown at the time -- toured the state in a bright red pickup truck and repeatedly told audiences that his opponent had "never seen the inside of a pickup truck."

By walking away from a sure-thing second term in 2002, Thompson reinforced that populist image. He also spent the next five years outside of Washington as his party steadily lost the trust of the American public. Thompson can make the argument that he wants to be part of the solution. That's a compelling argument when paired with Thompson's conservative credentials and personal attributes.

The final piece of the Thompson puzzle is money. McCain, Romney and Giuliani have all been in the race and raising money for months (if not years), and with the pricetag for the nomination estimated at between $50 and $100 million the ability to raise millions of dollars is a huge hurdle.

Lucky for Thompson that his home state is renowned for its willingness to donate to political candidates. Beginning with Sen. Howard Baker's (R-Tenn.) run for the presidency in 1980 and with Al Gore's first run in 1988 and then both of Sen. Lamar Alexander's unsuccessful bids for national office (and don't former Sen. Bill Frist's abbreviated run), Volunteer State donors are acclimated to supporting their native sons.

Baker, Frist and Alexander are intimately involved in the recruitment of Thompson and would undoubtedly bring their financial networks to bear on his behalf -- ensuring a solid financial base on which to build a national campaign.

Combine Thompson's capacity for fundraising in his home state with his starpower and his acceptability to social conservatives and you have a package that no other candidate in the field offers. The sooner Thompson gets in the race the better, however, as it takes months to build the kind of organization in states like Iowa and New Hampshire he will need to be competitive.

I feel bad for Nancy Pelosi, AND her neighbors. Anti-war activists from the group Code Pink have been giving her the same treatment the president gets at his Crawford, Texas, ranch. Camping on her San Francisco lawn, they’re demanding she cut off funds to the troops in Iraq.
Besides coolers and mattresses, protesters have brought along a giant paper mache statue of Mahatma Gandhi, who is pretty much the symbol of the anti-war movement. Code Pink was founded on his birthday, and when Saddam Hussein was being given a last chance to open Iraq to U.N. weapons inspectors, posters appeared around America asking “What would Gandhi do?”

It these bleeding hearts had there way not only would we pulling out of Iraq, we'ld be pulling out of all areas of conflic.
We'ld would stop importing and production any gasoline... gasoiline or diesel engines would be outlawed.
These bleeding hearts would be tickled pink if we just torn down all the fences and opened our boarders to one and all.

Thank God they not in charge yet... and that God for me like Fred Thompson who will still point out the nay doers and fight the bleeding hearts that want to turn American into one big wimpie love feast.

Passing of a good man!

Today is a sad day for us that have been through the doors of Amends Ministry...
Its founder Dewey Massey passed away yesterday at hid home on Oak Island.
While Admends is no longer there... but the need for it is... many of us that came there with just the clothes on their back , fresh out of prison, will always remember the man with the white hair and the soft spoken voice that welcomed them.
I met Dewey in the fall of 1999. I had just spent six years as a guest of Uncle Sam at one of his resorts known as the BOP. I was very lucky to have a good job at the time so I was far better off than most of the others. My job kept me busy most of the time so I didn't really get to spend a lot of time with Dewey until I was laid off that winter. I was worried about making the $125 / wk rent. Dewey said not to worry I could catch back up later and would often go into his own pocket to lend me a $10 or $20 to hold me over.
Dewey even help me find a job at N.E. Beard dry kiln down in Pleasant Garden. The ministry had a transportation department that rode the guys to and from work but because my job was out of the way Dewey himself would often be the one to pick me up at night.
I ended up going back to paving until APAC bought the company I worked for and I refused to work for them. Dewey's health at that time was taking some bad turns and he had turned more and more of daily operation over to Robert Holmes. They were also having trouble keep van drivers. So when Dewey and Robert asked me to join the staff and take over the transportation department I was thrilled to join the staff.
Sadly Dewey soon went in for a kidney transplant, of which he body rejected and his health got worst and worst till finally he stepped down and out of the picture totally.
Dewey got another kidney transplant and moved down to the coast. And area he loved. His health remained and problem with many ups and downs. He seldom ever came back to visit his Ministry and when the mismanage operations finally killed it I'd stop seeing him at all.
By the time the last resident left I was the longest resident they had... I had also held the transportation job the longest, and was the last one there to have been welcomed by the soft spoken white hair man.
Myself and Jeff Nicks, and Ruffin the ministries cat that was a kitten Dewey fed when he started the ministry all ended up moving in together not too far from the old place.
Some of us would still keep in touch... when ever we did the same question would be ask, "Seen or heard from Dewey?"
I can truly say without a doubt that Dewey Massey was a true man of God and really did care for the ones that came and went through the doors. Some onto a good straight life and some to end back up in prison... which ever it was Dewey held love in his heart and prayer's on his lips for them.
So come Monday morning will all gather to say good by to one of God's chosen.
There be tears, and stories, and sadness. Cause we'll be saying good bye to a good man that never looked at a man as what he was, he looked at them as what they could be.
Good bye Dewey my old friend... I shall miss you!

Freshman 'Orientation' on Gay Experiences Angers Parents in Illinois High School

Some parents of an Illinois public high school have accused it of promoting a homosexual agenda during a mandatory freshman orientation class that includes gay students talking about their own experiences.

"The school makes heterosexuality and homosexuality equivalent, and our country is deeply divided on that," Hauser told the Tribune.

In classrooms this week, panel sessions at Deerfield High School geared toward helping students adjust to high school will include speakers from a school club, Straight and Gay Alliance, who will openly talk about topics such as being bullied for being gay and being a friend of a homosexual person.

The class is mandatory, but parents can choose to remove their child on days the lessons concern them, school officials said. Some parents are pulling their children out of the program, The Chicago Tribune reported.

The newspaper reported that many parents are upset over the homosexuality discussion, saying it denounces religions that believe homosexual relations to be wrong or immoral.

Parent Lora Sue Hauser, who heads a group called North Shore Student Advocacy, wants the panel discontinued, saying sexuality issues are better addressed by parents and trained counselors. She said the panel is one of several ways that Deerfield High and other schools treat homosexuality as morally acceptable without presenting the viewpoints of those who disagree.

She said dozens of parents belong to the advocacy group but fear they will be labeled as haters or religious fanatics if they speak out.

"You can't dump that on a 14-year-old," Hauser said. "These are really difficult waters to navigate."

The Chicago Tribune reported that the school sees the panel as a way to ease the transition into high school. The topic of homosexuality is only one of many subjects covered in the orientation; others include study habits, and becoming getting familiar with the school and its resources.

NORCO, California (AP) -- More than 1 million rounds of ammunition, a cache of weapons and a tunnel were found at a man's home after an explosive fire that forced a neighborhood evacuation, authorities said Friday.

Crews worked to fortify the tunnel, which measured 5 feet wide by 8 feet long, to ensure it was safe. It appeared to be at least 10 feet deep and led into a backyard, authorities said.

The fire Thursday afternoon at the home in Norco, about 45 miles east of Los Angeles, caused some of the ammunition to explode.

The man tried to run back into the house after firefighters arrived and had to be restrained by sheriff's deputies, Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy Juan Zamora said.

After the blaze was extinguished, crews discovered metal and wooden boxes of ammunition for shotguns, small handguns and assault rifles.

On Friday, sheriff's deputies and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives combed the house for evidence.

Dozens of metal and cardboard boxes filled with ammunition for shotguns, small handguns and assault rifles sat in a driveway. Two of the assault rifles were illegal, Zamora said.

The man had no permit for 75 pounds of black gunpowder that was also recovered, Zamora said.

No arrests had been made. The man, whose identity was not released, was taken to a hospital where he will receive a psychological evaluation, Zamora said.

Last April, authorities said they found more than 1,300 weapons and 89,000 rounds of ammunition in the San Bernardino County home of a man who claimed to belong to a militant group with aims to overthrow Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. Robert Ferro of Upland faces counts of unlawfully owning and failing to register guns.

Gary Maujean and his wife and friends visited Claire's Lounge in Pinellas Park, Fla., where Maujean ordered a soda, abstaining from alcohol so he could be the designated driver.

His lawyer, Tom Carey claims the bar's owner grabbed Maujean, slammed his head against the door and then threw him out, causing an injury that required more than twelve stitches, reported WFOR.

Maujean is planning to file a discrimination lawsuit against the establishment over the incident.

The bar tells the story a little differently, however. They claim Maujean didn't order anything to drink at all.

Now the Florida legislature is getting involved in the issue.

State Senator Mike Fasano has proposed a bill that would ban bar owners from ejecting designated drivers for choosing not to drink.

The bill would also stop bars from refusing to serve customers based on factors like race, sex, religion or nation of origin.

The gringo he fired had to take a job at Wal Mart for 200 per week and get food stamps to keep his kids fed.
